1715

Plough Court pharmacy, the forerunner of Allen & Hanburys Ltd, is established in London by Silvanus Bevan.  Glaxo acquires Allen & Hanburys in 1958.

1830

John K Smith opens his first drugstore in Philadelphia

1842

Thomas Beecham launches the Beecham’ Pills business in England.

1865

1865 Mahlon Kline joins Smith & Shoemaker - as John K Smith & Co had become. Later the company becomes Mahlon K Smith & Company, which is renamed Smith, Kline & Company in 1875.

1873

1873 Joseph Nathan establishes Joseph Nathan and Company, the foundation for the Glaxo company to be formed later.

1881

Burroughs Wellcome & Company is established in London by American pharmacists Henry Wellcome and Silas Burroughs.

1989

SmithKline and Beecham merge to form SmithKline Beecham.

1995

Glaxo and Wellcome merge to form Glaxo Wellcome.

2000

GlaxoSmithKline is formed by the merger of Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham.

Sino-American Tianjin Smith Kline & French Laboratories Ltd. is established. (joint venture)

1988

Chongqing Glaxo Pharmaceuticals Ltd. is established. (joint venture, sold out of group in 2004)

SmithKline Beecham (Tianjin) Co., Ltd. is established. (joint venture)

1995

SmithKline Beecham Biologicals (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. is established. (joint venture, became wholly owned in 2005)

1997

Glaxo Wellcome (Suzhou) Pharmaceuticals Ltd. is established. (wholly owned)

1998

SmithKline Beecham (China) Investment Co., Ltd. is established. (wholly owned)

2000

Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham successfully merge.

2001

SmithKline Beecham (China) Investment Co., Ltd. is renamed GlaxoSmithKline (China) Investment Co., Ltd. (wholly owned)
