AIDS control programs

GSK is the first and ever foreign pharmaceutical company to invest in AIDS control in China. We sponsor national HIV/AIDS education programs, donate medicine to the HIV treatment program in severe infected areas and conduct the largest ever Chinese HIV clinical study.

Hepatitis education

Support the China Hepatitis Prevention Foundation and the health authority to carry out series hepatitis education programs, including training courses to doctors and public educational activities all over the country. The Hepatitis B Day was held in 31 capital cities.

Asthma education

Cooperate with Chinese Medical Association to conduct "easy asthma plan" nationwide; support founding of China Asthma Alliance and consecutively support World Asthma Day public and patient education caimpaign in China; establish continuous medical education program named "Asthma Free Living" in major cities and support respiratory research project.

Diabetes education

Carry out a continuous Medical Education program named "Control to Goal", covering 40 cities. Initiate public health education programs around the country, covering a public audience of 15 million.

Vaccine initiatives

Cooperate with the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association in initiation of "China Vaccination Popularization" campaign, which focused on improving academic communications among senior Chinese public healthcare professionals, training of care givers and public vaccination education. Inititate "Family Vaccine" public education actitities since 2007, helping design vaccination plan for the families, espeically for children.

Mental health education

Sponsor a series of clinical studies on depression and anxiety disorders; set up "the Mental Health Scholarship"; work with the China Medical Association to develop diagnostic software to help doctors identify patients suffering from depression disorders. Together with leading Chinese Physicians, launch the "Peace Action" program which is designed to improve the diagnosis & treatment, over 12,000 doctors and patients have been benefited from these programs.

Drug safety education

Our "Sunshine Educational Project" and "Community Education Project on Drug Safety Awareness" have been regarded as the model to promote self-medication in China. The programs cover 100,000 pharmacists around the country and 100 public lectures in over 20 major cities are organized.

Access to medicine

GSK-Simcere Relenza Licensing Agreement

GSK signed a licensing agreement with Simcere Pharmaceutical Group of Nanjing, China, in September 2006, granting Simcere the right to manufacture and sell the anti-viral influenza treatment zanamivir in China, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and all Least Developed Countries. Zanamivir is the active ingredient in GSK's Relenza (zanamivir for inhalation).

As a leading provider of vaccines and anti-viral medications, GSK is committed to doing everything we can to support governments and health authorities around the world in planning to respond to a global influenza pandemic. This agreement with Simcere is intended to expand available supplies of zanamivir in areas of the world that may be on the front line of a possible influenza pandemic.
